6 Factors For Selecting Oil Seals

The leading causes of external lubricant leakage from pumping systems, hydraulic machines, gear cases, and sumps are incorrect sealing system selection, improper application, poor installation, and inadequate maintenance practices. Oil seal manufacturers in India will advise on the importance of checking your pump regularly. The type of seal you choose also plays a crucial role in its functionality.

Another way of solving these issues is by understanding the various types of sealing materials available, redefining selection procedures, and consistently implementing sound replacement and maintenance practices.

When choosing oil seals, several factors must be taken into account. When specifying oil seals, designers and maintenance engineers must consider these factors.

Let us dive into the six significant factors to consider without further ado while choosing oil seals from oil seal manufacturers.

  • Shaft Speed

The shaft finish, runout, housing bore and shaft concentricity, type of fluid being sealed, and oil seal material used determines the maximum allowable shaft speed.

  • Temperature

The temperature range of the mechanism in which the seal is installed must not be greater than that of the seal elastomer.

  • Pressure

Most conventional oil seals are only intended to withstand extremely low-pressure applications (about 8 psi or less). If there is or is expected to be additional internal pressure, pressure relief is required.

  • Shaft Hardness

Shafts with a Rockwell (RC) hardness of 30 or higher can be expected to have a longer seal life. When exposed to abrasive contamination, increase the hardness to RC 60.

  • Surface Finish Shaft

Optimal shaft surface finishes result in the most effective sealing. The direction of the finish tool marks and the spiral lead affect the sealing efficiency. Polished or ground shafts with concentric (no spiral lead) finish marks produce the best sealing results. If you must use spiral finish leads on shafts, they should point toward the fluid when the shaft rotates.

  • Concentricity

Seal life is reduced when the bore and shaft centres are misaligned because the wear is concentrated on one side of the sealing lip.

Numerous factors should be considered when deciding on the best oil seals for the job. This article has only touched on six factors that must be considered, and it is far from exhaustive. Every job is unique, and each job must be thoroughly and carefully considered in isolation.

There are numerous different gaskets and seals to choose from, and the correct one must be selected to ensure that the job is completed safely and that the finished project will last as long as possible.

Whatever the best oil seal is, purchasing it from a reputable oil seal manufacturer will help ensure that the gaskets you use are of the highest quality and provide the best value for money.
