There are various types of cylinder liners that you can use for various purposes. The major three types of cylinder liners include the wet, dry, and finned ones. Though they are different, they work at the same principle to protect the piston from impurities and heat. Dry Cylinder Liners

It is one type of cylinder liner. It has a shape like a barrel with a flange on its top, which helps keep it in position when placed in the cylinder block. The outer surface of the dry cylinder is usually in contact with the cylinder block. Since this liner is not in direct contact with the cooling water thus is referred to as a dry cylinder liner. The thickness of the dry cylinder liners can be from 1.5 mm to 3mm. The dry cylinder can replace the worn-out cylinder easier, and you will not have exposure to the water jacket.

Wet Cylinder Liners

Wet cylinder liners are complete cylinder barrels. It has a flange at the top to fit into the cylinder block. The liner has three grooves that provide the surface to insert the rubber packing rings. Unlike the dry liner, this cylinder liner has direct contact with the cooling water, thus why it is called a wet cylinder liner. Also, the outer surface of this liner does not require precise machining. The thickness of the dry cylinder liners can be from 1.5 mm to 6mm.


Wet cylinders have the below advantages over dry liners

  • You do not require extra tools or equipment to remove or replace it.
  • It also provides a cooling effect to the piston because it directly contacts the circulating cooling water.
  • It also provides a leakproof between the cylinder casting and the wet liner.
  • It is easy to expand the wet cylinder without any resistance.
  • It just requires simple construction of the cylinder casing without precise machining inside the cylinder block.


Air-Cooled/Finned Cylinder Liners

It is a type of liner that is constructed using metal to provide impurity and heat resistance. This kind of liner works the same as the dry cylinder liner. On the surface of this liner, it is fitted with tiny fins to allow air to flow in great force so that cooling inside the cylinder can be sufficient. The advantage of Air-Cooled/Finned Cylinder Liners includes;

  • It is resistant to corrosion.
  • It is effective in terms of heat dissipation
