What Is a Rocker Arm & How Does It Work?

What Is A Rocker Arm

Pushrods are typically located between the camshaft followers and the rocker arms, while rocker arms are generally installed between the pushrod and the intake & exhaust valves. The pushrods push up on the rocker arms, allowing the valves to be pushed down and opened.

Read on to learn more about the rocker arms produced by leading rocker arm manufacturers in India, and how they work.

Various Types of Rocker Arms

  • Stamped Steel Rocker Arm

The most prevalent Rocker Arm style is the Stamped Steel Rocker Arm. This design is one of the easiest and least expensive to produce since it is created from a single piece of metal.

The rocker is held in place using a trunnion pivot connected to a nut with a rounded bottom. Using this system, we can retain the balance of the rocker while enabling it to rotate up and down.

  • Roller Tipped Rocker Arms

These resemble the Stamped Steel Rocker, with a roller at the valve end of the rocker arm. Less friction somewhat increased power and decreased wear on the valve tip are the benefits of this configuration, while simplicity is still achieved by using the trunnion pivot nut and stud. They can also be made from steel or aluminium castings or machined pieces.

  • Full Roller Rocker Arms

This rocker is not made of stamped steel; they are either made of machined steel or machined aluminium. Instead of using the trunnion pivot, they use bearings or bushings. The pivot stud is still used, but the nut is not.

The rocker shaft has bearings on either end and is secured in place with bolts. This allows the rocker to pivot on the shaft.

  • Shaft Rocker Arms

Depending on how the head was built, the shaft could run through two or all the rocker arms, increasing the stiffness of the assembly, as the shaft is significantly more rigid than a screw. This is important since valvetrain rigidity directly affects its deflection and motion, both of which can cause uncontrolled movement or excessive vibration at higher RPMs.

Rocker Arm Mechanism

The camshaft lobe elevates one arm of the rocker, which pivots on its centre and the other arm presses down on the valve tip to open the valve at the right moment.. This regulates the flow of gas in the engine.

Leading manufacturers of rocker arms in India work with OEMs to design, develop, manufacture and supply reliable rocker arms globally, ensuring longer service intervals for customers and minimal downtime.
